AskAcademic is a service that allows users at participating academic libraries to get help from librarians and use their library resources remotely. By chatting online with a librarian, users can get the answers they need 24/7. Amigos Library Services acts as coordinator of this service.
This online research and information service is available to any student, faculty, or staff member from a college or university of a participating academic library. It allows all students, faculty and staff at participating colleges and universities to
- Ask questions anytime – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- Receive expert assistance from a qualified information professional
- Get help with research or learn new search techniques
AskAcademic fields an average of 800 questions a month and over 50 individuals from AskAcademic member libraries share the staffing responsibilities. During after hours, 24/7 after hours librarians monitor the chat service.
Because we’re a human powered search engine, AskAcademic is designed to “go beyond Google” to provide a customized service that fits the needs of each customer.
AskAcademic sessions can last 5 minutes or 25 minutes depending on the question and customer. Each session takes time because AskAcademic librarians have conversations with our customers, strive to find authoritative, reliable information, and also assist with research techniques so our customers can learn from their experiences with our librarians.
Funding is provided by membership fees. For further information contact AskAcademic@amigos.org.
